May Bank Holiday - Friday

Took a train from Waterloo to Weston-super-mare. It was still sunny when we arrived, and I think you can tell that we were happy to see a beach again!

Birnbeck Pier was opened in 1867, and links to an island just off shore. It was used by the Admiralty for secret weapons testing in 1941, was damaged by storms in 1990, and has been closed since 1994. The derelict pier is kind of an eerie site.

We picked up our hire car, and I drove us around to Kewstoke. This is a lovely one horse town just north of Weston, surrounded by hills, plains and a very muddy beach!

Weston is often called "Weston-super-mud" because the tide is hardly ever in, leaving vast stretches of mudflats. Lots of fun to squish your toes in!

We found some dying embers on the beach, which we revived with some bone-dry driftwood, to enjoy a nice warm fire while we watched the sunset. If only we had some marshmellows.
